Frequently Asked Questions

  • You can either self-refer or obtain a referral to see one of our psychologists from your GP or psychiatrist. If you are self-referring, we kindly ask that you provide us with some background information about you and what you’d like help with. This background information can be forwarded via email to info@argylepsychology.com.au. If you have been referred by your GP, Psychiatrist or other specialist, they have usually already forwarded your referral directly to our practice or given you the referral.

Once your referral is received it is reviewed by the psychologist you have been referred to, who will determine whether or not they can accept your referral. This depends on a number of factors including the psychologist’s availability/capacity, and whether they have the skills and expertise to support you with the problems you are wanting help with. Unfortunately, we cannot accept all referrals received at Argyle Psychology. Some of our psychologists also have closed books, meaning that they are currently not accepting referrals for new clients.

  • The wait time to see a Psychologist at Argyle Psychology varies depending on the Psychologist you have been referred to or would like to see, but we will be able to give you a better idea of how long this wait will be once your referral has been accepted. Once appointments have been scheduled for you, we can put you on our cancellation list to offer you an earlier appointment if one arises.

  • The standard fee for a 50-minute consultation with a Psychologist at Argyle Psychology ranges from $195 (Registered Psychologist) to $235 (Clinical Psychologist). This is discounted from the Australian Psychological Society recommended rate of $311 per 50-minute consultation.

Please note that our practice is not a bulk-billing service. Even if you have a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, there will still be an out-of-pocket fee for your session.

  • Medicare rebates are available for psychology services provided under a Mental Health Care Plan. A mental health care plan is completed by your general practitioner and provides access to Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual sessions per person, per calendar year. These sessions can be conducted face-to-face or via telehealth (phone or video call).

From 01/07/2024 to 30/06/2025 Medicare will rebate:

    • $141.85 per standard consultation with a Clinical Psychologist

    • $96.65 per standard consultation with a Registered Psychologist

Clients referred under an Eating Disorder Plan (EDP) or Chronic Disease Management Plan by their GP are also entitled to a Medicare rebate for their session. Medicare rebates can be claimed on the day of your consultation.

  • The majority of health funds provide rebates on psychological services. Please contact your fund to check your eligibility and the rebate offered for psychological therapy.

  • As a courtesy, we will send you a SMS reminder of your upcoming appointment 48 hours before the appointment is due to occur. As is standard in health care practice, we require at least 24 hours notice if you are unable to attend your session. This allows us to offer the appointment to a client from our waiting list. We do understand that extraordinary circumstances arise and will give these due consideration, however failure to provide sufficient notice may result in the full session fee being charged.

  • We know how appointment it is to gel with your psychologist – especially when you are talking about topics which might be very personal or sensitive. Feel free to let your Psychologist or our friendly reception team know if you don’t feel the fit with your psychologist is quite right. We can then explore whether there may be an option for you to be seen by another psychologist within the practice.

  • We unfortunately don’t have wheelchair access. Our building has both exterior and interior stairs, but we can make arrangements to avoid use of the stairs for those with mobility issues. Please contact our reception team on (03) 6124 2226 to discuss an alternative access arrangement.
