General Psychological Therapy

At Argyle Psychology, we are skilled at treating a range of mental health issues including anxiety, depression, perinatal mental health issues, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, grief and loss, addiction, eating disorders, chronic pain, adjustment to and psychological management of physical health conditions, and stress. Our clinicians regularly attend conferences and workshops to ensure they maintain and build upon their clinical knowledge and skills, and to ensure our clients get the best outcomes possible.

Our clinicians don't take a 'one-size fits all' approach to psychological treatment - instead, we tailor our services and approach to meet the unique needs and goals of each client. We ensure that the therapeutic approaches we use are evidence-based. This means that the treatments we use have consistently been shown in research and scientific experiments to ease psychological symptoms for clients. Some of the evidence-based treatments we offer include:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy

  • Schema therapy

  • Acceptance and commitment therapy

  • Mindfulness-based approaches

  • Dialectical behaviour therapy

  • Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR)

We also regularly work with clients who have experienced a physical and/or psychological injury as a result of a workplace or motor vehicle accident. We are passionate about returning these clients to pre-injury functioning where possible.

Medico-Legal Assessment

Argyle Psychology can provide medico-legal assessments for a range of legal issues including Child Safety, Family Law and Victims of Crime. We endeavour to provide assessment reports that comprehensively address any terms of reference provided.

Our Principal Clinical Psychologist, Dana Adaway, has previously been appointed as a Single Expert Witness in court proceedings and is familiar with giving evidence in court.

Trauma-Informed Care

Our clinicians strive to provide trauma-informed care to individuals impacted by trauma. This means that we aim to facilitate a sense of safety for the client, and to create opportunities for the client to rebuild a sense of control and empowerment. We use a strengths-based framework to help clients achieve recovery from their trauma.

Argyle Psychology uses evidence-based approaches for the treatment of trauma, including Trauma-focussed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT), and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). We work with a range of trauma-affected individuals including those with acute, chronic and complex trauma.

Our clients include those with trauma stemming from childhood abuse and neglect, sexual assault, exposure to family or community violence, disasters, birth trauma, motor vehicle or workplace accidents, medical trauma, and trauma incurred in one's line of work (i.e. first responders).

Couples Therapy

Our romantic partnerships can be a source of immense support and joy, and also considerable frustration and pain. It can be helpful for new couples to learn skills to enhance their relationships and prevent problems, while longer term couples may find themselves dealing with regrettable relationship injuries, loss of pleasure in the relationship, drifting apart and being stuck with the same set of problems. Gottman relationship therapy is based on 40 years of research into what makes successful couples. This therapy is designed to teach specific skills to strengthen relationships, to manage conflict better and to improve communication around issues where couples have become gridlocked.

Couples therapy starts with an assessment phase, which consists of four appointments and a detailed online questionnaire. Understanding the origins of the
relationship and how current problems have developed is crucial to delivering effective relationship therapy.

  • Appointment 1 - Where you both come together and share your understanding of your relationship history, its strengths, and challenges. This session lasts for 90 minutes (much longer than a standard 50-minute consult).

  • After this session, couples will be required to complete a Gottman online assessment. This questionnaire can take up to one hour to complete and costs $45 each ($90 per couple.) You will receive an email requesting you complete the questionnaire.

  • Appointment 2 and 3 - This is where you each have your own private 50-minute appointment.

  • Appointment 4 - You will both come back in together for your 50-minute feedback session, including a detailed report of the results of your questionnaire, your strengths, and areas for development. After this session you can decide if you would like to move further into intervention/skills-based sessions. Many couples find they need ten sessions in total (four in the assessment phase, and six intervention sessions).

Fees for couples therapy
Initial and subsequent joint sessions for couples (80 mins duration) - $330 per session.
Couples individual sessions (50 mins duration) - $235 per session.
Online assessment and report - $90
Unfortunately there are no Medicare rebates currently available for couples counselling, however some private health insurance will cover couples therapy.
